St. Michael the Archangel at 502 West Front Street, Monroe, MI 48161 US - Religious Education Program for children
| Religious Education Program for children |
Religious Education Classes for non-Catholic school students are taught on Mondays, 6- 7:15pm.
MISSION STATEMENT The Catechists of St. Michael the Archangel are committed to this Mission Statement: We accept the call of our baptismal commitment to inspire, encourage and nurture God's children in their faith formation. We strive to foster a living, conscious and active faith which motivates each child to respond to a life of service in their parish and community.
Faith is a grace - a gift of God - and our growth in faith is intimately related to our response to the gift. The men and women of St. Michael the Archangel support the parents of our parish in their awesome responsibility of nurturing the faith-life of their children. To that end, we provide a catechetical program of religious faith formation with a three-fold mission: 1) to proclaim and teach God's word, 2) to celebrate the sacred mysteries and 3) to serve God's people.
THE GOALS OF RELIGIOUS FAITH FORMATION Through religious education, we seek to help lead our children to an understanding and appreciation of the life and teachings of Jesus and a personal relationship with God. We hope to instill in them the importance of Christian morals and values that will draw them to a lifetime of faithfulness to God and Gospel values. We offer faith formation both for students of our parish school as well as students in public school and home-school environments.
TEACHERS / CATECHISTS Our program of faith formation is staffed by volunteer catechists - people of faith who, along with the parents (and like the teachers in our parish school), are charged with the task of teaching the Catholic faith to our children. Catechists are formally trained and, after serving an
internship, are certified by the Archdiocese.
REGISTRATION FOR PROGRAM Registration for the Religious Education Program takes place each year during the month of June. The cost of the program is as follows: one child is $60; two children is $75; three or more children is $90.
TEXTBOOK The textbook used by both the parish school and the Religious Education Program is the "Faith and Life Series" by Ignatius Press. Each student has a copy of the book and an activity supplement.
ATTENDANCE The children who attend a public school or are home-schooled are provided catechetical instruction on Monday evenings from 6:00 to 7:15 pm beginning the Monday after Labor Day through the Monday before Memorial Day (usually 30-33 weeks total). This program is available for children in first through eighth grades.
SACRAMENT PROGRAMS Sacraments are not "things" we get when we reach a certain age. The Church requires the necessary catechesis (training) and preparation. Children who are preparing to receive their First Communion and Confirmation at St. Michael must have completed the previous year of catechesis. Children entering from another parish program must have a letter documenting completion of the prior years' training. Naturally, as with all education, children enrolled in sacramental programs must attend regularly.
PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES In addition to living a life of faithfulness to Gospel values, parents are expected to regularly attend parent meetings, regularly participate in all preparation activities and regularly attend Sunday Mass (with their child or children). If you have questions about religious faith formation programs at St. Michael the Archangel, please contact the parish office at 241-8645.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AT OUR PARISH SCHOOL The information on this page deals primarily with religious education for students in public or home schools. Naturally, the children who attend our parish school receive their catechetical instruction at school - through a daily program of religious instruction, liturgical celebrations and a variety of service activities. The Archdiocese requires a certain time allotment for each grade.
